The course aims at helping the students to understand better the realm of English vocabulary and introduces the basic notions of lexicography and lexical semantics. The students are encouraged to make up a classification of different types of dictionaries and to find out the strategies for explaining the meaning(s) of a dictionary entry. The study of word meaning concentrates on the diference between sense and reference, the delimitation of different types of meaning, the changes in the meaning of words and semantic neologisms, and sense relations. Lexical cohesion is explored using as example diferent types of text.
