Course outline:

This course provides the first stage of a six term Practical Language Course. In the course of three years, the students will cover 28 units of the course textbooks, including 4 review lessons, and additional materials from the recommended literature. At the end of the course (i.e. after six terms of the Practical Language Course) they are expected to achieve C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference. They will thus cover 2 levels in three years, while each level requires the minimum of 90 hours of class work and intensive preparation at home.

In the first stage, the students will master first five units of the course textbook enabling them to develop all four skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing for better communication. As they are expected to be on the upper-intermediate level of B2 independent users of English, their knowledge should comply with the B2 standards: Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. They will continue to work on extending the range and accuracy of the language as well as the register. They will learn to analyse the language for teaching purposes and will be aware of the fact that they have changed their roles - from being the fluent users of the language into being the source of information about the language and language model providers.
