The aim of the course is to introduce the students to a functional approach in the study of English syntax. The course provides some theoretical preliminaries for the study of the following topics: functions of language,  sentence patterns in communication, grammatical cohesion, variation in English, information processing. The practice activities include analysis of authentic texts which stimulate the students to  explore the meaning of structural patterns in context, and transformations, which aim at mastering more difficult syntactic structures.

The core textbook used in this course is Grammatical Structures in English: Meaning in Context (Dontcheva-Navratilova, 2nd ed.). This means imprints dated later than 2005; the most recent is dated 2018.
