The aim of the course is to introduce the students to a communicative appproach in the study of English syntax. The course provides some theoretical preliminaries for the study of the following topics: functions of language, sentence patterns in communication, grammatical cohesion, variation in English, information processing. The practice activities include analysis of authentic texts which stimulate the students to explore the meaning of structural patterns in context, and transformations, which aim at mastering more difficult syntactic structures.
The course is based on Olga Dontcheva-Navratilova's textbook Grammatical Structures in English: Meaning in Context (MU 2005).
