The course combines an introduction into various genres and topics in British and American writing for children middle-grade readers and young adults, with practical, hands-on demonstrations of how to use literature in the EL classroom.
The class addresses students as readers, (future) teachers and (potential) parents, inviting them to explore issues related to children's and young adults' world, and models some strategies, approaches and activities that can be used in the classroom.
The course offers a mixture of reading materials, activities and approaches so as to cater to different ages and levels.
The course focuses on the often neglected (American) popular literature, explaining its roots, values and the appeal for contemporary readers. In classes, students are encouraged to read, discuss and question selected materials.
